For an extended period, reciprocal links have dominated the landscape of inbound linking strategies. However, this approach requires a shift. Google has implemented changes to its algorithm that now devalues all reciprocal links. The updated algorithm is designed to detect the mutual exchange of links between two entities aimed at artificially inflating their inbound link count.
This practice of reciprocal linking contradicts the original purpose of Google’s algorithm, which is to have quality content naturally attract links. Essentially, reciprocal linking amounts to a bilateral agreement to promote each other’s content solely to enhance one’s own visibility, a tactic that Google disapproves of (refer to Link Schemes).
There are assertions that Google can now detect complex link schemes, such as three-way links (i.e., website A links to website B, website B links to website C, and website C links back to website A). The validity of these claims is uncertain, but one fact is clear: inbound linking strategies should not rely on reciprocal linking. This artificial method of generating links is frowned upon and proves to be ineffective. Instead, the focus should be on developing unique, high-quality content within your niche, which will organically generate links.
